9. CULTURAL FEATURES FROM THE AEGEAN
LOCATION: ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KITION
CHRONOLOGY: 13th - 11th century BC
QR: 98
DESCRIPTION:

During the 13th century BC, a small sanctuary, Temple 3 (shown in yellow as no.1) was built in this area. Temple 3, together with Temple 2, framed a Sacred Garden.

Around 1200 BC, Temple 3 was demolished and replaced by a more monumental sanctuary, Temple 1. In this area an open courtyard was created, where an altar was constructed (shown in red as no.2). At the base of the alter, horns of consecration were found (shown in green as no.3), a religious symbol of Minoan Crete. This, together with other cultural features, indicates the influx of population elements from the Aegean during this period (12th -11th centuries BC).
