DESCRIPTION:

The Agora (Forum) of ancient Amathous was the heart of the city’s political, commercial, and social life during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Situated near the harbour, the Agora served as a central public space where citizens gathered for trade, legal affairs, and communal events. The Agora (Forum) grew monumental in scale during the 1st-2nd century AD. It was organized around a large paved square, with a monumental fountain in the centre. It was surrounded by colonnades and public buildings, including shops, administrative offices and possibly areas of worship. Its layout reflected typical Roman urban planning, emphasizing functionality, symmetry, and grandeur.

The presence of baths, fountains, and elaborate paved floors further highlight the Agora’s importance in the evereday life and prosperity of Amathous during this period. Archaeological findings, such as inscriptions and statues, demonstrate that the Agora also functioned as a platform for the emperors to promote their ideology.
