6. CIRCULAR MONUMENT
LOCATION: ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE SANCTUARY OF APOLLO HYLATES
CHRONOLOGY: 7th century BC - 4th century AD
QR: 87
DESCRIPTION:

This monument is unique in Cyprus. It consists of a ring-shaped pebble floor or walkway, covered with mortar, which surrounds part of the bedrock with seven pits cut into it. The pebble floor or walkway was bounded on the exterior by the foundation of a retaining wall. It probably served for processions or dances around a grove of sacred trees, especially laurels, which was the sacred tree of Apollo and was associated with the ceremonies in honour of Apollo.

The cult is documented architecturally since the 8th -7th century BC. The Circular Building underwent some significant alterations during the Roman period, when a monumental entrance from the northwest was added to the wall of the sanctuary, as well as a second entrance from the main street.
