MOSAIC OF KTISIS (CREATION)
CHRONOLOGY: 4th – 7th century AD
QR: 7
DESCRIPTION:

The cold room, known as the frigidarium, features an elaborate mosaic floor divided into four panels. Two of these panels display intricate geometric patterns. One panel showcases a red-legged partridge at the centre, while the fourth panel, located to the north, presents the bust of a young woman set within a medallion encased in a square frame. This female figure, holding a measuring rod corresponding to the Roman foot, is identified by the Greek inscription "KTISIS." She represents the personification of the Creation of the World or the foundation, a popular motif during the Late Antiquity and Early Byzantine periods.

Adjacent to the depiction of Ktisis, at the edge of the mosaic floor, there is a rare example of a board game (tabula lusoria). This game board was designed precisely for this space and served as a base for a group game played with knob-shaped pieces. Its integration into the mosaic floor indicates that bathers could enjoy playing games in a setting of relaxation and tranquillity during their bathing experience.
