DESCRIPTION:

The so-called "Hellenistic House" was discovered by the Polish Archaeological Mission in 1986, southwest of the "Villa of Theseus." It is named as such because in the early stages of research the preserved ruins were thought to belong to a house from the Hellenistic period. However, later archaeological evidence revealed that the house is Roman and dates to the late 1st to early 2nd century AD. The building appears to have been in use for only a few decades, as it was destroyed by an earthquake around the mid-2nd century AD. The northern side of the destroyed building was later levelled and covered by the "Villa of Theseus". The house had at least 30 rooms and covered an area of approximately 2,280 square meters. It was constructed around a peristyle courtyard, the eastern colonnade of which was found collapsed on the ground and has since been reconstructed. Two mosaics with regular tesserae stand out for the rarity of the themes they depict. The floor made of cut pebbles remains unique in its type in Cyprus.
