DESCRIPTION:
The next two rooms are located in the area of the original entrance of the house and their depictions are related to the welcoming of its visitors. In the first room, the inscriptions ΧΑΙΡΕΙ (rejoice) and ΚΑΙ ΣΥ (you too) in the frame of the mosaic floor were greetings for those entering and exiting the building. The rest of the mosaic is divided into nine panels. Ιn the four corners are depicted four male busts that do not bear any inscriptions naming them however they are easily recognisable from the attributes that accompanied them. They are the personifications of the four seasons: on top is Summer and Spring, and on the bottom Winter and Autumn. The male bust in the centre, which bears no symbol, is difficult to identify, but it is likely that it is either Dionysus or the personification of Aion (the eternal time) or some other abstract concept related to Time. The four intermediate panels depict animals and still lifes associated with the seasons.
The peacock, the sacred bird of the goddess Hera, symbolizes beauty, pride and immortality, thus, in addition to the charming aesthetic value of the motif, extends thematically and spatially the welcome of visitors by expressing the wish for good luck, but at the same time emphasizes the luxury and prosperity of the house and that of its owners.
