25. HOUSE OF THE GLADIATORS
LOCATION: KOYRION ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
AREA: HOUSE OF THE GLADIATORS
MOSAIC DECORATION
CHRONOLOGY: 3rd-4th century AD
QR: 27
DESCRIPTION:

The central courtyard of the house was decorated with mosaic floors featuring geometric patterns in the centre and figurative scenes on the eastern side. Of particular interest are the two surviving gladiator scenes. Initially there were three panels, but the third one has been lost along with the section of the house that collapsed into the cliff.

The northern scene depicts a training moment. Two gladiators, whose names are inscribed above their figures in Greek—MARGAREITES and HELLINIKOS—are practicing with the blunted swords (swords without sharp points).

The next scene depicts the moment of the actual fight. Two heavily armoured gladiators stand out (only the name of one, LYTRAS, survives). The unarmed figure dressed in rich political attire, shown in the centre, is the referee of the combat, DAREIOS. Their names are written in Greek, and a fourth inscription is partially preserved beneath the figures (ONI[---]), which likely refers to the name of the mosaic sponsor.

In addition to the areas with the elaborate mosaics, there was also a small fish pond in the central courtyard, the bottom of which was also decorated with mosaics.
