19. PYRAMID-SHAPED STRUCTURE
LOCATION: KOYRION ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
AREA:
CHRONOLOGY: 4th century BC
QR: 21
DESCRIPTION:

The oldest architectural remains uncovered at Kourion are located near the northeastern edge of the hill, close to the complex of the Public Baths and the Agora. These remains cover an area of 250 square metres and date back to the Late Cypro-Classical period (4th century BC). They consist of a large, pyramid-shaped structure built of large rectangular limestone blocks in the irregular isodomic system.

The function of the building is uncertain, but its connection with two other structures of a defensive character may suggest that the building might have been used as a glacis, forming part of the defensive system of Kourion.
