5. ON THE TOP OF THE HILL
LOCATION: ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KALAVASOS-TENTA
CHRONOLOGY: 7500-5500 BC
QR: qr-119
DESCRIPTION:

The location of a group of stone structures centered around Structure 14 on the top of the hill, together with its large size and the elaborate nature of its plan, all suggest that this complex was of special significance. It comprises a circular building (14) and the surrounding courtyard (Structures 15, 16 and 19) and was built immediately on top of an earlier building (17). The plaster floors of Structure 17 were painted red and its external diameter seems to have measured about 10.5 meters. Thus 17 is the largest structure excavated on the site. In the earliest phase, this sector of the site was occupied by Structure 36, which consists of a double wall with an external diameter of 7.44 meters.

Despite the lack of evidence indicating the purpose of these buildings, it is notable that at all times this area of the site appears to have been occupied by buildings which are differentiated from others on the site by their large size or the complexity of their plan. The structures might have served as the successive residences of the headman of the village.
