3. WORKING AND STORAGE
LOCATION: ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KALAVASOS-TENTA
CHRONOLOGY: 7500-5500 BC
QR: qr-117
DESCRIPTION:

The processing of ochre, a raw material used for painting, was attested in Structure 35. Against the wall on the north side of the building, a large stone basin in association with lumps of worked red ochre and the stone tools, which were used to grind or crush the ochre, were found.

Structure 34 is the smallest complete structure excacated on the site and must have served a specialized function. Several apertures were intentionally cut in the wall, constructed mainly of mud-brick. A very solid bench-like feature at the foot of the inner face of the wall, may have served to support a raised, probably wooden floor. The building most likely served as a granary or as a store for perishable materials or commodities that would have been damaged by humid conditions.
