DESCRIPTION:
At the beginning of the 13th century BC, a sanctuary, Temple 2 (shown in yellow as no.1), was erected in this area. Around 1200 BC, when the monumental Temple 1 was constructed, Temple 2 was reconstructed. In this new arrangement Temples 1 and 2 were twin sanctuaries, which communicated through a large courtyard, Temenos B (its extent shown in red as no.2).
Temple 2 is of the same type as the monumental Temple 1, a type also known on the Syro-Palestinian coast. These sanctuaries consist of an enclosed, rectangular, open-air courtyard. The Holy-of-Holies, an area to which only the temple priests had access, was constructed at one of the narrow sides of the temple.
The Phoenicians abolished Temple 2 and Temenos B was expanded in its place.
